Am I a Candidate for TMJ Treatment?
As a preferred dentist in Washington DC, we understand that patients develop this painful condition with TMJ symptoms for a number of reasons, and will gladly consult with anyone who feels they may be a candidate for TMJ treatment. In Washington DC, patients of L’Enfant Plaza Dental Arts and Dr. Norkiewicz and Dr Azeez can turn to us for TMJ and TMD treatment.
What is TMJ? Also called TMD, it is a disorder that affects the temporomandibular joint, which is that enormous hinge-like joint that connects your lower jaw to your head. It is a remarkably flexible joint, which makes it surprising that it might experience major problems. However, it does, and that would mean that any issues with opening or closing the mouth, moving the jaw, and even more unusual signs, could mean you are a candidate for TMJ treatment.
Millions of people require treatment for jaw pain, though experts are yet unsure as to the actual cause. It is still a question of which came first – jaw pain due to certain issues or issues that were caused by the jaw. For example, many people who use TMJ treatment come to us with pain in the face or neck. They might come because their teeth are very sore and they are clenching them at all times. Some come because they have suddenly developed a strange popping sound when opening and closing the jaw.

Clearly, there are many signs that you are a candidate for TMJ treatment. Because there are so many TMJ symptoms and underlying causes for TMJ, the treatment can vary quite widely from patient to patient too. We begin to address the issue with a thorough exam, looking for any signs of damage that your condition has caused. For example, many patients experience wear on their teeth and need to have the damages repaired in addition to some sort of TMJ treatment.
We typically use splints that focus on overcoming the type of activity occurring with your jaw. For example, some of our patients clench their jaws in the condition known as bruxism. They grind their teeth and need to have the jaw held in a relaxed position. We custom design a splint to meet such needs. However, another patient may do no grinding but simply clench to the point it affects their upper neck. This would require an entirely different splint.
