Am I a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is the least costly, least invasive way of getting a better smile. This is because it requires no restorative dentistry. Almost anyone can be a candidate for teeth whitening treatments, and almost anyone will see their teeth whitened by several shades following treatment.
Who is a Good Candidate?
The best candidate for teeth whitening will be the person who is willing, at least in the short term, to forego the substances that caused the teeth to become discolored in the first place. Coffee, tea, red wine, cola, and tobacco are always the worst culprits when it comes to staining your teeth. The good news is that these surface stains are usually easy to eradicate. While you are having whitening treatments, it really is best if you do not indulge. If you feel you absolutely must, a temporary sealant can be applied to the teeth. However, there is still a small chance of substances getting in.
If your stains are under the tooth enamel (intrinsic stains), then you can still be a candidate for teeth whitening, but you may need more treatments than someone who just has surface stains. This is because it is important that the whitening agent gets under the enamel, and into the dentin of your teeth.
Is Anyone Not a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
If your teeth are very sensitive, or your tooth enamel is damaged, or if you have gum disease or oral cancer, you are not a good candidate for teeth whitening. If your teeth look translucent, they could actually end up looking worse after a teeth whitening treatment.
Also, if you have had a lot of dental restorations, a whitening treatment may not be advisable. This is because restorations are colored to match your teeth as they were when the restorations were installed. There is no way to change the color of fillings, veneers or crowns, so numerous restorations might make you a poor candidate for teeth whitening. If you are contemplating restorations, you should have your whitening treatment before they are installed.
