Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea

Sleep ApneaBy now, most of us have heard the term “sleep apnea” but mistake it for an issue like snoring, but that is a big misunderstanding! Sleep apnea is a condition in which the sleeper actually stops breathing periodically throughout the night. Breathing may stop only a few times per night or dozens of times. Each time the sleeper stops breathing, they partially wake and begin to breathe.

Though there are three types of sleep apnea, the most common is obstructive sleep apnea or OSA. It allows the soft tissue of the airway to collapse on itself, making that distinctive snoring or snorting sound, and it is, obviously very risky.

This is why someone who has sleep apnea may also be extraordinarily tired at all times, experience headaches and mood swings, and suffer all of the other symptoms of inadequate sleep. Deprived of air and sleep, the patient with sleep apnea is nowhere near as healthy and happy as they should be.

This is why the dental professionals of L’Enfant Plaza Dental Arts offer sleep apnea treatments in their Washington DC office.

Are You a Candidate?

How do you know if you are a candidate for the sleep apnea remedies available from Dr. Dennis Norkiewicz and Dr. Nadeem Azeez? Have you been told that you snore or snuffle awake many times per night? Have you noted yourself struggling with sleep? A sleep clinic may confirm your suspicions, but the sleep apnea remedies available from their office are so easy to use, safe, and effective, that you may just want to try them to see if they improve your overall health and well-being.

What Remedies Are Available

Sleep Apnea applianceFor their DC patients, two options are offered.

TAP® – The “Thornton Adjustable Positioner” is a classic solution known for keeping the airway open during sleep by advancing the lower jaw. It is known for its general comfort and for not causing the same unpleasant effects of other devices for sleep apnea. Non-invasive, it does not promote gagging or constant waking either, and is one of our most commonly used solutions.

Somnomed® – Patients who suffer from sleep apnea may also try a Somnomed or SomnoDent device. This also moves the lower jaw into an advanced position that can prevent the airway from closing.

Which is the right solution for your needs? That is only a question that can be answered when you visit their dental office and have a consult with a general dentist. You can review the problems you are suffering, and learn more about the designs and functions of the two sleep apnea devices their dentists prescribe for patients.
