Questions You Should Ask Before Getting Dental Implants

The loss of even a single tooth can be the first domino in a long line of them; that one issue can cause a whole range of issues to occur – and with tooth loss, none of those after effects are good. At L’Enfant Plaza Dental Arts in Washington DC, we offer dental implants as a form of restorative dentistry and encourage anyone who has lost one or more teeth (or who requires teeth to be removed) to consider the many benefits to be gained from implant dentistry.

Naturally, as your preferred dentist in Washington DC, we don’t expect you to go into any major dental work without the fullest amount of information. So, we offer you some important questions to ask prior to getting dental implants.

Will it be necessary to have a dental implants specialist or can any dentist do the work?

This is a huge issue. Today it is acceptable for general dentists to do implants. However, it is always much wiser to work with someone who has already undergone specialized training and who has a lot of experience with the treatment. After all, it is surgical placement, and this could come with any number of factors that only an expert can recognize or address.

What will dental implants require for me specifically?

This too is a very wise question. Every patient is different, and one patient may need only the implant surgery while another may require extraction, implant treatment, and even bone grafting. Finding out what your dental implants will require, learning the risks and assessing your best options is the best course of action.

Wouldn’t dentures be better?

For some patients, dentures are the most viable solutions to their needs. However, with tooth loss comes bone and gum shrinking, a less varied diet, and the need to update the dentures every five to ten years. With implants, those issues are negated and avoided.

Implant dentistry provides you with a permanent replacement for a complete tooth. That is why it is the ultimate form of restorative dentistry. It can allow you to regain the fullest use of your tooth or your mouth, it will be a permanent solution with only minimal oral hygiene required.
