3 Big Things You Need to Know Before Getting Invisalign

You want to look your best in everything you do, especially your career. You make sure you’ve got your hair, clothes, and confidence all on point. But what about your smile?

Many adults, even those who had braces as teens, realize their teeth aren’t exactly as straight as they’d like them to be. But putting the wire braces on at this point in life simply isn’t an option. For many in this boat, Invisalign is the teeth-straightening method of choice.

Invisalign is a series of clear orthodontic devices that slowly shift your teeth until they look the way you want them to. You can wear them to work, to school, and on dates without anyone noticing. Considering Invisalign for your teeth?

Here are 3 things you need to know before making the leap to Invisalign:

It’s Custom-Made for Your Mouth

Once you decide to get Invisalign, your dentist takes scans of your mouth that are then sent off to the Invisalign lab. There, a series of trays will be made just for you. These trays are meant to be changed out every two weeks or so, and slowly move your teeth into the position you desire.

When switching to a new tray, be sure to carefully check that you’re using the next one in line. Using a tray too soon will lead to more discomfort than you should experience!

You Are the Key in Your Treatment

Unlike metal braces which get put on your teeth and have to be removed by an orthodontist, the success of your Invisalign treatment is entirely on your shoulders. With Invisalign, you need to wear your trays 22 hours per day, every day, for treatment to be effective.

If you aren’t diligent with wearing your trays daily, or changing them on time, you won’t see the results you want. Making sure you’re responsible with where you last left your trays, keeping track of which tray comes next, and remembering to put them back in after eating or brushing your teeth is essential to getting straighter teeth.

Take Extra-Good Care of Your Teeth

While a solid dental care routine is important no matter what, keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy during Invisalign treatment is especially important. The Invisalign trays cover your teeth for 22 hours per day, meaning there’s plenty of time for germs and bacteria to grow if you aren’t brushing and flossing well.

Floss, brush, and use mouthwash every morning and night, as well as after every meal or snack. You don’t want to trap food particles or sugar on your teeth! Additionally, keep the Invisalign trays clean by carefully washing with soap and water, rinsing well before putting them back in your mouth. Traditional toothpaste is too harsh for the trays.
