A Basic Look at Sleep Apnea
It is quite likely that you have heard the term sleep apnea by now. Most of us think of it as snoring or snorting awake in the middle of deep sleep. However, that is not at all what sleep apnea means. It is far worse than being a noisy sleeper, it is actually that you are a sleeper who may stop breathing several times every night. It is why Dr. Dennis Norkiewicz & Associates, along with the staff of L’Enfant Plaza Dental Arts in Washington, DC offer sleep apnea treatment.
Are You Tired All The Time?
Why would a dental office provide treatment for sleep apnea? Essentially, there are a few ways that this condition occurs and the most common is known as “OSA”. This is when the soft tissue at the back of your mouth collapses on itself and blocks the airway. It is why that snorting or snoring sound accompanies the condition. It is also why you must treat it if you have it. As a problem that manifests within the mouth, it is a perfect issue for a dental office to treat!
What can we provide to our patients dealing with chronic snoring and sleep apnea? We offer two different treatments. The first is the Thornton Adjustable Positioner or the “TAP.” Many people know about this device. It is custom made for each patient and looks like a very complex mouth guard. What it does is very simple – it realigns the lower jaw to prevent the soft tissue of the palette from collapsing back and creating the apnea.
This device is designed to fit comfortably and so you need not worry about choking or gagging on it and can instead begin to experience much deeper and more restful sleep.
You may also be interested in the Somnomed treatment. This is another device inserted into the mouth and it too moves the lower jaw forward. It must also be custom fit to your mouth and is only available by consulting with one of our dentists.
How do you know if you are a good candidate for this treatment? If you are not sleeping well or have a partner or spouse who complains of your snoring, it may be a good idea to consult with one of our doctors about sleep apnea and snoring solutions. The two devices are so safe and easy to use that it just makes good sense to give them a try.
